Gulf War veteran, instructor the latest in homeless deaths in Bemidji | Grand Forks Herald

BEMIDJI, Minn. — Hours before David Williams died, he lay alone in a sleeping bag under a bridge.Light poured out from a nearly full moon, and from the cars that whirred above like ocean waves in the early morning on Oct. 17, a Saturday.

Williams, bald-spotted and sometimes goateed, knew a lot about the stock market. He fought in the Gulf War, exposed to harmful gas sprayed by the enemy. He was good with machines, working as an instructor at the Motorcycle Mechanics Institute in Phoenix and as a manager at Polaris Industries in Roseau.

The stone bridge over the Mississippi River on Paul Bunyan Drive is a likely place to find those, like Williams, who don’t have a home. It’s a nice-looking bridge, for one, and it offers protection from the weather and privacy from almost everyone.
